How many friendships forged in fire do you have? It is safe to say not “all kinds of folks” will stare down a thousand automobiles while standing on the highway holding your hand. It takes a certain type of person to do that. Like, a person who is a little bit crazy. (Crazy for justice, anyway.) That’s why it didn’t surprise me that Keep reading!
Lies about protesters You know what the presence of protesters from out of town represents? I’ll give you a hint. It doesn’t have anything to do with Fox’s make-believe “outside agitator” messaging or lend credence whatsoever that protesters are paid like mercenaries. It indicates that people all across the United States still look to Ferguson as the mecca of protest against Keep reading!
I’m confused, angry lady. When I faced you on HW I-70, I was anxiously holding hands with fellow protesters as you sat in your air-conditioned SUV. You screamed out your window that we should let you pass because you were late to a PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) meeting. I admit I snickered when you said it. As friends and I continued Keep reading!
Tired of the Black Lives Movement? I haven’t re-laced my Chuck Taylor’s after St. Louis County police made me remove them so I didn’t “off” myself in jail. Or whatever. That’s one of the downsides to standing in solidarity on an eight lane highway in rush hour traffic to raise awareness that Black Lives Matter. Still. Highway I-70 is the Keep reading!
Why fight? We do this for Mike Brown. I’m not the same person I was a year ago, since Mike Brown was killed in cold blood. I’ve been introduced to my own white privilege and rightly had my ass handed to me when I exerted it. I know what white fragility is for the first time in my life. I’ve Keep reading!
It must be incredibly frightening for anti-gay protesters to watch the world around them change and not understand how or why. I assume it would shake one to his/her core to be born into a community where your beliefs about sexuality were foisted upon you such that you forgot you ever had a choice to think them or not. Fast Keep reading!
I cannot believe we are still talking about the confederate flag allegedly representing Southern pride and heritage. Quoting Ishann Tharoor from the Washington Post, “Americans are finally accepting what many believe it has represented all along: not heritage, nor pride, nor a badge of Southern identity, but a regime of white supremacists who went to war against the Union in order to preserve the inhuman institution of slavery.” Keep reading!
I attended two anti-racism protests on Father’s Day because, of course. Predominately white activists participated in the “Wake up, Speak up, Act up: A Call to White Fathers and White People of St. Louis” action in Forest Park in the morning. Those driving through the park who would roll their windows down were offered a leaflet asking white people to Keep reading!
Do you approve of any type of protest against police brutality so long as it’s non-violent or does it just depend? Do you think citizens should be required to get a permit or stay on the sidewalk? Are you okay with a spontaneous protest in front of a police station but draw the line at protests taking place outside a Keep reading!
Assata taught me I’m an asshole. That’s right. A complete tool. I didn’t know who Assata Shakur was before September 2014 because I’m white. I bet if you are white and reading this, you aren’t sure who Assata Shakur is. It’s okay. Admitting you’re an asshole is the first step. Hanging out in front of the Ferguson Police Department as Keep reading!
